Brantley, Sarah J.

Sarah J. Brantley, an old lady, 72 years of age, living with her son John McCall about one and three-fourth miles southwest of the city, died from the effects of burns caused by her clothing catching afire last Sunday evening about 5 p.m.
Mr. McCall and his wife had gone to the barn to doctor a sick horse, leaving Mrs. Brantley sitting in a chair smoking, as she was in the habit of doing. On returning to the house about 30 minutes later they found her lying on the floor dead, with her clothing nearly all burned off of her and that remained in flames. It is thought that in some way the flames were communicated to her clothing while lighting her pipe. The can bottom chair upon which she had been sitting was partially burned. She was buried in the Hiller Cemetery Monday.
